Room-by-Room Design

Each room has a different job, so a single design formula rarely works across the whole home. A room-by-room plan helps you focus on the activities, furniture, storage and lighting that matter in each space while keeping the home’s overall style consistent.

Living room

Start with the main conversation or viewing area. Check the relationship between seating, circulation, windows and the room’s focal point. Use a 2D plan to test furniture scale before choosing smaller decorative items.

Bedroom

Plan the bed position first, then check access on both sides where needed, wardrobe doors, bedside storage and natural light. Keep everyday storage close to where it is used and avoid blocking windows or heating features.

Kitchen

Map fixed services, food storage, preparation space, cooking and cleanup zones. Compare the layout with the room’s actual dimensions and confirm appliance clearances against manufacturer instructions and local requirements.

Bathroom

Plan the shower or bath, toilet, vanity, door swing, storage and ventilation. Wet-area materials and plumbing should be selected for their intended use and installed according to local rules.

Home office

Prioritize a comfortable work surface, appropriate task lighting, power access, storage and a quiet position. Consider how screen glare changes during the day.

Keep the whole home connected

Repeat a small number of colours, materials or shapes to create visual continuity. Use our interior design guide and floor plan resources as starting points.

A sequence that works for most homes

Plan the busiest shared rooms first, because their layouts decide circulation for the rest of the home. Then work through bedrooms, wet areas and work spaces, repeating the same checks each time: fixed features, clearances, storage, lighting and daylight. Keeping one consistent checklist makes it easier to compare options and to spot conflicts, such as a door swing that blocks storage.
